Happy 40th birthday, Dungeons & Dragons

And here, as a bit of a birthday present, is a typewritten review of the original original D&D game (that is, First Edition):

Due to the weather, We will be closing at 3PM today.
New comics will be available tomorrow (Wednesday).

Weather warning

If the winter storm/snow we're rumored to get tomorrow materializes, remember that the store may close early, and that would mean "no Game Night."

If you're lucky, the snow won't mean that comics are delayed on Wednesday. But keep an eye on this space: if books are going to be late, we'll be sure to inform you here.

What if...?

...Disney had bought DC instead of Marvel?

Guaranteed Comics for 1/15/2014 - Ghosted #6

Jackson Winters is a man with a dark past -- haunted, you might say. A thief without rival yet wasting away in prison, Winters has no idea that his chance for freedom will also mean confronting the horrors he's tried to forget. When he is sprung from incarceration at the request of eccentric millionaire Markus Schrecken, Winters is given a choice: mastermind one final job, or be returned to prison. Winters accepts the job and assembles a team to carry out the oddest request of his career: stealing a ghost.

"Ghosted" entertainingly blends elements of horror and heist to deliver a scary, fast-paced story about revenge, regret and a super creepy door to hell.

Guaranteed Comics for 1/15/2014 - X-Files Conspiracy #1

The event of the year begins here! When The Lone Gunmen discover Internet files from future, they learn that a plague will soon wipe out most of humanity. With Agents Mulder and Scully working one lead, the Gunmen must spring into action and investigate several urban legends: a group of ghost-hunters, mutant turtles that live in the sewers, shape-changing alien robots, and a vengeful spirit from beyond the grave!

Magic the Gathering: The Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has bought the rights to everybody's favorite Thursday-night card game and wants to turn it into a giant movie along the lines of Lord of the Rings.

What do you think? Could it work? I know there's an ongoing story hinted at by the flavor text on the cards, and that there have been numerous novels and comics, but will MtG work as a property that will draw audiences into the theater? If you play Black and Green, are you going to want to see a movie where White and Blue are the heroes, or will you feel shut out? If the movie does make it to theaters, will cards that use movie images for their art be tournament legal, or will old-school hate them? Tell us what you think.

And then come in Thursday night to play some Magic in our alternating weekly tournaments.

A double confirmation for Marvel's Ant-Man

Ever since it was confirmed that Paul Rudd will be starring in Marvel's Ant-Man film, there's been one question: which Ant-Man is he? Hank Pym, the one who invented the shrinking process in the first place? Scott Lang, the second guy, who stole the costume to save his daughter? Eric O'Grady, the third one, who was kind of a jerk?

Well, Marvel has just announced that Michael Douglas (yes, that Michael Douglas) has been cast as Hank Pym, and confirmed that Paul Rudd will be Scott Lang.

So, who's excited to see these big stars get real little, under the direction of the guy who did Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World?

ALSO: here's an interview Edgar Wright gave in 2006(!!) laying out his plans for the character.

Firefly RPG preview event by Margaret Weis Productions.
Saturday, January 25th at 2PM

Grab your crew, get your ship and travel the black. The crew of Serenity has been tasked with the job of transporting a girl to her wedding day. It sounds too easy and to good to be true. Correct on both counts because like always, nothing is quite what the surface would tell you when you are in the verse.

Join the Grown as Gamers podcast team as they run a story for the Firefly RPG written by Margaret Weis herself!! The corebook for this game will be released in February so this is your chance to get an early look at one of the most anticipated RPGs of the year!! See the fine folks at Comic Store West to preregister or you can contact the Grown as Gamers team at Just like the Serenity herself seating is limited so if you want onboard, make sure you register early for the event and save yourself a seat.

Funko, the company that did the Walking Dead Mystery Minis and Horror Classics Mystery Minis, is doing a set of Marvel figures now, too (as listed in this month's new Previews catalog). Here's the first picture of them:

If you're interested, be sure to let us know so we can make sure to order enough. You folks went crazy for the Horror Minis, but we couldn't reorder them because Diamond was already sold out.
