Introducing X-Men #1 (again)

Tricked? How, exactly, can you be "tricked" into buying X-Men? Believe me, if there was a way to trick you into buying X-Men, we'd totally be doing it. We'd have you subscribing to all the X-Books, just because.

But don't worry, I've read the new X-Men #1 (previewed here). I'm not usually a big X-Fan - most comic collectors go through their "X" phase at some point, and mine ended a long time ago. Still, the promise of Brian Wood's writing and Olivier Coipel's artwork (plus the gimmick of an all-female X-Team) was enough to get me to try the first issue. And now I'm going to try to trick you into buying it by telling you how it is.

JUST ARRIVED - Iron Maiden HeroClix

I assure you this is not a joke.
Iron Maiden HeroClix have been rumored for years.
They have finally arrived.

Free Comic Book Day Sets Attendance Record

Via ICv2:

On Saturday May 4th, an estimated 1.2 million comic book fans made their way to 2000 comic book shops around the world where they collected more than 4.6 million comic books. The event generated an estimated $2.2 million in free publicity for the industry as the event was covered by more than 240 TV news shows, over 460 news outlets, and more than 720 online sources. The event was also big on social media generating 66,000 tweets as the hashtags #FCBD and #FreeComicBook Day took the #1 and #2 spots on Twitter on May 4th between 9am and 4pm.

More than 40 comic book publishers provided the 52 free comics that provided the major attraction for this year's event. The next Free Comic Book Day, which is set for May 3, 2014, promises to be even more exciting as this industry-wide event continues to pick up steam.

Wow, that's pretty impressive, and you were a part of it! We had a ton of fun with this year's FCBD, and hope to see you again next year!

Summer Hours Now In Effect

Newest Man of Steel trailer re-created in Minecraft

Are you familiar with the popular videogame Minecraft? If you're reading our blog, yeah, you probably are. Nerd. Anyway, here's the third Man of Steel trailer, redone in Minecraft's distinctive blocky style:

HeroClix Fear Itself Month 1 Tournament Moved

Sorry guys,
We did not realize this weekend is Wizard World Philly. Since many of our players are going to be there (plus our judge) and since we have not yet received our prize kit for month 1 we will be moving this Sunday's HeroClix event to next Sunday, June 9.

Same bat time, 2pm

Some more Captain America back issues available NOW !!

Most of the Captain America collection has sold already.
I just put the rest of the collection out, some in our statue display and some on our comics wall.

Don't wait these will probably sell as quickly as the other one's from that collection.

Update: Quicksilver may not be as friendly as you thought

So yesterday we mentioned that Quicksilver was suddenly appearing in the X-Men First Class sequel as well as in Avengers 2. Well, according to movie site HitFix, it seems that this isn't a case of two studios working together, but two studios fighting.

You have to wonder why Fox would get in a pissing match with Marvel about this: is there any reason other than grabbing headlines about the fight? The First Class cast is huge - is Quicksilver really going to make that big a difference?

Here's the really crazy thing, though: superhero movies are so prevalent in 2013 that we've progressed to the point where major studios are fighting over the rights to Quicksilver. Freaking Quicksilver! Four years ago, Fox and Warner Brothers were fighting over the rights to Watchmen, and now it's down to Quicksilver? That's fast!

Did you ever in your life imagine that Pietro Maximoff would be a hot property?

Quicksilver runs into First Class sequel

Director Bryan Singer tweeted this earlier today:

Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

— Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) May 23, 2013

You may not recognize the name Evan Peters, but he was one of the friends in Kick-Ass, and is also the creepy kid on American Horror Story.

Now remember, a few weeks ago, Joss Whedon said he was using Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2. And Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige said both studios could use the characters. So now the question is, is this an olive branch between the two competing studios, with Fox trying to get tied in to that heavy Avengers money, or are they trying to lay claim to a character before anyone else gets a crack at him? We'll have to wait to see who ends up playing Quicksilver in Avengers to know for sure.

Man finds copy of Action Comics #1 in his wall

Minnesota resident David Gonzalez was remodeling an abandoned house he'd purchased, and while pulling crumpled newspaper (used as insulation) out of the walls, found an original printing of Action Comics #1. Not the "New 52" version from 2011, the original Action Comics, from 1938. The first appearance of Superman. Just chilling in the wall.

The comic is currently available for auction, if you're feeling spendy (it ends on June 11, which may be just long enough for you to mortgage your house and secure a loan to buy it).

Remember that we've recently bought some older comics, so if you happen to find a copy of the world's most valuable comicbook in your wall, or behind the couch or beneath a rug or what have you, bring it on in. You can be famous!

Remember Patton Oswalt's Star Wars filibuster from Parks & Rec? It's probably been a few weeks since you watched it, right? Well now's the time to watch it again, because someone has taken the rant and animated it:

Hey, if Angela can cross over to the Marvel Universe, why not this?

More S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hot on the heels of the show's official announcement, here's the first cast photo and a synopsis:

Fresh from his role in the summer's box office smash, MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven't been classified yet—the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). Their initial investigations lead them to civilian computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes [sic], aliens and the unusual—of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents—that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

And the first teaser for the show. Note that this isn't the "Rising Fire" Hulk footage that was leaked the other day (and swiftly taken down everywhere), but the bit that aired during tonight's broadcast of Once Upon a Time on ABC:

It's Official...

ABC has picked up Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D.

Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

CORRECTION - HeroClix - No Man's Land Finale

I missed a valid expansion for Sunday's No Man's Land.
There are three valid expansions to build a 600 point team from.

They are:Batman, Streets of Gotham and No Man's Land.

See you Sunday

A live-action "Judge Dredd" fan film

I still haven't gotten to see the Dredd film that came out last year, but I do know that this half-hour fan film is better than the Sylvester Stallone one from 1995 (it has to be, because that one was awful).

If you want another dose of Mega-City One, IDW Publishing has an original ongoing Judge Dredd comic, as well as Judge Dredd Classics, which presents stories from Britain's 2000 A.D. magazine in color for the first time. Or, if you don't mind the black and white, there are tons of TPBs that we can order for you.

(Judge Minty, by the way, first appeared in 2000 A.D. #147 - and that's reprinted in Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 03 along with a bunch of other cool stuff. Order yours today!)

Über #1 On Sale Tomorrow

You've all read the hype about this comic and many of you picked up issue #0 last month.
Issue #1 goes on sale tomorrow. We anticipate a sell out (even though we've ordered extras).
Also available issue #0 (second print).

The Fleet Grows with X-Wing Miniatures Expansions Wave 3!

Fantasy Flight Games has announced their next wave of expansions for X-Wing Miniatures and it's four brand-new ships to the game. The TIE Bomber and B-Wing were expected and the Imperial Shuttle was a definite maybe, but the HWK-290 was a little unexpected. These expansion ships are due the "3rd Quarter of 2013," meaning soonish.

The TIE Bomber, B-Wing, and Imperial Shuttle aka Lambda Class, are all from the Star Wars movies with HWK-290 being the first expanded universe vehicle to appear in X-Wing Miniatures. The HWK-290 is most famous for being piloted by Kyle Katarn, star of the Dark Forces series of videogames. No surprise they went EU over prequels, considering their target audience (die-hard Star Wars geeks).

So, who wants to see Dash Rendar's ship? Or how about the TIE Phantom, which is one of the coolest looking TIE Fighters of all time. Drop down to the comments section and tell us what ships you'd love to see make it into the miniatures game.

If you want to guarantee you get these ships, come in today and preorder: the sooner you do, the higher you are on the list.
