Agents of SHIELD spoilers: what just happened?

It's been a week now, so we're going to assume everyone's had a chance to see the winter finale of Agents of SHIELD. If you haven't, consider this a spoiler warning, because we're about to explain who all those characters were and what the heck is going on.

So, the first reveal we got was that Skye's father was named "Cal." That really doesn't tell us anything, but ultra-nerds of the internet have guessed (and Marvel has confirmed) that he is in fact Dr. Calvin Zabo, aka Mr Hyde:

Originally a Thor villain, Zabo was obsessed with Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and set about trying to re-create the results - which is totally a thing you can do when you live in the Marvel Universe. He's been a member of (anti-Avengers team) The Masters of Evil, and the Thunderbolts.

What to read next:

  • Avengers Under Siege tpb.
  • Thunderbolts, after issue #155 (collected in the "Violent Rejection" [#152-157], "Great Escape" [#163-168], and "Like Lightning" [#169-174] tpbs).
  • The recent Ghost Rider series, collected in the "Engines of Vengeance" tpb.

Our second reveal was that Skye's real name was Daisy: in the comics, Mr. Hyde has an illegitimate daughter named Daisy Johnson, aka "Quake."

She first appeared in 2004's Secret War #2, as a SHIELD agent working under Nick Fury. She has seismic powers, as seen at the end of the episode.

What to read next:

  • Secret War by Brian Michael Bendis.
  • Secret Warriors series, collected in various tpbs.

The obelisk that has been the Macguffin for this season so far opened to reveal a glowing crystal - for once, it's not an Infinity Stone, but rather a Terrigen Crystal. The Terrigen Crystals release the vapor known as Terrigen Mists, which give the Inhumans their powers (that's what that fog spraying out of it was), and why it only affected some characters, not everyone.

What to read next:

  • Infinity, the 2014 miniseries featuring Thanos.
  • Inhumanity, available in tpb.
  • The new Inhumans series, which just started earlier this year.

This episode has begun the long run-up to Marvel's 2018 Inhumans movie, so this is a great time to start reading the books and get ahead of the curve. Come on in and we'll help you find what you want.
