Sex Criminals, our newest Guaranteed Comic, gets reviewed

Exactly what it says in the title: the new Matt Fraction comic, Sex Criminals is this week's new Guaranteed Comic. And it's been given a favorable review at CBR, which compares the book to a Judd Apatow film and praises Chip Zdarsky, the one-man art team.

Sex Criminals is rated M for Mature, which means it's not for kids, but it's not a particularly "smutty" comic, either. Sex is part of the book, but it's not the point of the book, you know? Give it a try! Like the review says, it's 32 pages of story (starting right on the inside of the front cover - no time wasted!) for only $3.50, and if you really don't like it, you can bring it back to trade in.

US Air Force Chief of Staff wears Captain America mask to briefing

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh spoke yesterday at the Air Force Association's Annual Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition. And when he did so, he was wearing a Captain America mask:

Yeah. That's not a joke. It's not a Photoshop. It's not a story from The Onion. How can we be sure? Because the official Air Force account tweeted about it:

Funny, I always thought Captain America was in the Army, not the Air Force.

Ten reasons children should read comics

A list by Manfred Von Vulte:

While not all comic books are suited for children and teens, and some are written for adults, by adults; the truth remains: they are a powerful and useful genre for the development of a student's capacity to comprehend and analyze literature, while dramatically improving their proficiency in Language Arts.

1. Their Lexicon of Complex Words is Higher than Most Publications

In a personal and published study of over 1,000 comics and their inclusion of higher order words, most comicbooks and graphic novels featured an astonishing 36% – 76% of their text as representative of language found in senior secondary school and college/university placement tests. Most other periodicals and newspapers only garnered 14% of these higher lexicon words.

2. Improvement of Memory Skills

With the world becoming very media/visually literate, someone who is learning English or a reluctant reader/writer could use the comicbook as a means of engaging a sense of prediction and revision at the same time, by following sequential design, yet being able to visually flip back and restore the immediate visual hit again and again. This informed memory access (I.M.A.) and renewal is central to learning English in its colloquial and contextual element.

Because we don't want to just steal the entire article outright, you'll have to read the rest of the reasons on the original site. It's a list aimed at teachers, but there's no refuting the points it makes.

Fan re-creates the Batman TV show opening at home

Do you like the campy old Batman TV show? Well this guy clearly does!

Even if you don't like Adam West's magnum opus that much, you should still check out DC's new Batman '66 comic. It's surprisingly reminiscent of Batman the Animated Series in terms of storytelling, so that makes it a good choice for Bat-fans of any age - it's not dumbed down, nor is it too dark. Only two issues have come out so far, so now's a great time to give it a try!

JUST ARRIVED - Pathfinder Adventure Game

A forgotten evil stirs in the ancient land of Varisia. Dark magic once more thrums amid crumbling ruins, giants gather in titanic armies, cultists murder in the name of foul deities, and maniacal goblins plot a fiery end for the peaceful town of Sandpoint.

Launch a campaign to strike back against the evils plaguing Varisia with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords - Base Set. This complete cooperative strategy card game pits 1 to 4 heroes against the traps, monsters, deadly magic, and despicable foes of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game's award-winning Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. In this game players take the part of a fantasy character such as a rogue or wizard, each with varying skills and proficiencies that are represented by the cards in their deck. The classic ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) are assigned with different sized dice. Players can acquire allies, spells, weapons, and other items. The goal is to find and defeat a villain before a certain number of turns pass, with the villain being represented by its own deck of cards complete with challenges and foes that must be overcome. Characters grow stronger after each game, adding unique gear and awesome magic to their decks, and gaining incredible powers, all of which they'll need to challenge greater threats in a complete Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Adventure Path.

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is an expandable game, with the first set containing nearly 500 cards. The Rise of the Runelords - Base Set supports 1 to 4 players; a 110-card Character Add-On Deck expands the possible number of players to 5 or 6 and adds more character options for any number of players. The game will be expanded with bimonthly 110-card adventure decks.

The Teaching Dead

The University of California, Irvine is going to be offering a free, online, multi-week course based on AMC's The Walking Dead.

Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC's The Walking Dead will run for eight consecutive Monday nights and cover many topics:

From understanding social identities to modeling the spread of disease, this eight-week course will span key science and survival themes using AMC's The Walking Dead as its basis. Four faculty members from the University of California, Irvine will take you on an inter-disciplinary academic journey deep into the world of AMC's The Walking Dead, exploring the following topics:

  • Maslow's hierarchy of needs - is survival just about being alive?
  • Social order and structures - from the farm and the prison to Woodbury
  • Social identity, roles, and stereotyping - as shown through leaders like Rick and the Governor
  • The role of public health in society - from the CDC to local community organizations
  • The spread of infectious disease and population modeling - swarm!
  • The role of energy and momentum in damage control - how can you best protect yourself?
  • Nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world - are squirrels really good for you?
  • Managing stress in disaster situations - what's the long-term effect of always sleeping with one eye open?

Each week we'll watch engaging lectures, listen to expert interviews, watch exclusive interviews with cast members talking about their characters, use key scenes from the show to illustrate course learning, read interesting articles, review academic resources, participate in large and small group discussions, and—of course—test our learning with quizzes. We recommend that you plan on spending about two to four hours per week on this course, though we believe the course is compelling enough you'll want to spend more time.

That sounds pretty cool, doesn't it? And it's 100% free! How can you say no to that?

Enrollment is open now, and the courses start Oct. 14 - the day after Walking Dead Season 4 starts. If you plan to take the course, let us know; and then, let us know how it is.
